Mr. Book just finished A Giant Among Giants: The Baseball Life Of Willie McCovey, by Chris Haft.
This book will be released on February 1, 2025.
I was excited to see that there will be a biography coming about the great Willie McCovey. As former Dodger second baseman Jim Lefebvre said, “Willie McCovey was the most underrated superstar in that magical era. McCovey was always the guy who we feared the most. If you needed a base hit to tie the game up, if you needed a two-run double off the wall to tie the score or if you needed a three-run homer to win the game, he was the guy who was gonna do it.”
Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this one. I don’t think the book adequately did justice to what a great player McCovey was. There weren’t enough good stories about him in the book and the author’s use of statistics, writing as though the triple crown stats are almost all we have, was another big failure.
I give this book a B. Goodreads requires grades on a 1-5 star system. In my personal conversion system, a B equates to 3 stars. (A or A+: 5 stars, B+: 4 stars, B: 3 stars, C: 2 stars, D or F: 1 star).
